“In every community there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart there is the power to do it.” – Marianne Williamson
2020 has been a tumultuous year. We have faced a life-altering threat to our way of life as we know it in the form of a global pandemic. We have been physically removed from friends and family for our safety and for theirs. Our world literally came to a halt. We have had to deal with disrupted schedules and been saddened by cancelled plans of all types, from get-togethers with friends and family, to concerts, to travel, and even to something as simple as a dinner in a favorite restaurant.
Many of us are facing issues around our health and safety for the first time in our lives. These experiences are undeniably challenging and uncomfortable. These experiences are also something else that may not be readily apparent to us. They are an unexpected gift. We have been given the gift of a short walk in our ladies’ shoes.
Imagine your removal from friends and family seeming to have no end for you. Imagine having the safety of your home eliminated. Imagine your child trying to navigate a dangerous world with no protection or support. Imagine having no one to turn to that you can trust. Imagine feeling you will never have a safe place in the world again.
Restored Wings seeks to reunite our residents with safe, loving people while providing a nurturing space for recovery and rebirth. Our Amazon Wish List is a wonderful way to help us to provide items that enhance the protective and healing services we provide. You can also take advantage of smile.amazon.com and add to your already meaningful donation.
One of our featured wish list items is a weighted blanket. There has been a lot of focus recently around weighted blankets and health benefits. We can all relate to that favorite blanket and the feeling of home, safety, and comfort it can provide. Many of us still have a favorite blanket from childhood. Even if it is down to a well-worn and loved scrap, it brings us comfort. Goodhousekeeping.com featured 5 Benefits of a Weighted Blanket, According to Experts. They sighted benefits such as mimicking Deep Touch Pressure (DPT), the feel of a hug, the ease of stress and anxiety, and improved sleep quality. Weighted blankets can be an immediate source of comfort for our residents. It is common to have sleep problems after traumatic events. The challenges we have faced this year have disrupted sleep patterns for many of us. A lack of restorative sleep touches all aspects of our daily lives. It can change our mood and our productivity. It can impact relationships. Sleepfoundation.org outlines common issues associated with sleep disruption due to the pandemic and with trauma and sleep. Good sleep is an important tool for alleviation of anxiety and depression and for recovery from trauma. A weighted blanket can be used as a tool to support a restorative sleep environment. This helps put our residents in a healthier mind-set and, in turn, allow them to be more receptive to healing.
Please consider putting Restored Wings on your gift-giving list this season. We have many ways to donate and your gift goes toward building a brighter future and safe home for both labor and sex-trafficked survivors. It is a gift that will change the path our girls and women walk for the rest of their lives.
