“What is Faith?” Blog by Julie Shrader

“Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.  For by it the men of old gained approval.  By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.” Hebrews 11:1-3
I’ve been reading a lot about faith lately and learning so many things.  I have recently learned that there are different types of faith.

1.) Saving Faith This is what occurs when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.  This faith is not moved by disobedience.

2.) Situational Faith  If we are obedient to what God wants for us, it is earthly blessings that we then receive.  If we chose to be disobedient to God, we will not receive blessings that He wants for us.

3.) Spiritual Gift of Faith – This is an act of Grace from God to you.

Faith is action.  You can’t have faith in God unless you have the actions to back that up.  God has shown me in so many ways how my faith has brought me His blessings.  Sometimes, I have only needed enough faith as big as a mustard seed for Him to show up in my life.  “He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” –  Matthew 17:20

Faith without works is dead if you have no love for God which also means that you must walk WITH God, not ahead of Him.  When we walk ahead of God, we have chosen to do things our own way, not His.   Assuredly, this means you have a lack of faith when you put matters into your own hands.

But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS,” and he was called the friend of God. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.”  James 2:18-26

Being obedient and having faith, are two huge ways that we show God that we love Him with all our heart, mind and soul.  If you are having trouble with faith and how to have it, pray for it and read your bible.

Believe and have faith.
